What Is The Difference Bewteen koozie and Koozie?

The spelling used in our brand name is “koozee”, however both koozie and koozee refer to the can and bottle sleeve we use to keep drinks cold. Also known as beer sleeves, can coolers, bottle jackets and more, these names all refer to the same product.

The Name “Koozie” Used to Be Trademarked
The name “koozie” was registered as a trademark by the company Radio Cap Corporation in 1980. The Texan company let this registration lapse in 2001, however by then, many people have already come to refer to this drink sleeve as koozies. Much like how “Kleenex” is widely used to refer to tissue paper, the term “koozie” became synonymous with the drink sleeves we use to hold cans and bottles.
The Term “Koozie” Has Been Fought Over by Companies
Two companies – Kustom Koozies and Norwood – were involved in a dispute over the right to use the term “koozie” for several years in the 2000s. Although Norwood claimed that using names such as koozie, coolie, coozie and similar variations infringes upon its trademark, Kustom Koozies countered that the trademark has become generic and Norwood cannot claim exclusive right to use the term.
The two companies came to a licensing agreement for a few years between 2005 and 2009, however following that, Norwood instructed Kustom Koozies to capitalize the letters in “koozie”. Furthermore, they added a symbol behind their own brand koozies to identify “genuine” koozies over those produced by Kustom Koozies. This resulted in the licensing agreement being called into dispute yet again.
